In collaboration with the Danish Organisation of General Practitioners, the institutions for general practice and other research- and educational institutions the College seeks to strengthen general practice and the professional level in general practice.

General practice - a speciality

General practice is a medical speciality on a par with other specialities, and has a fixed program for continuous education prior to acquirement of the right to set up as a doctor. The general practitioner has a long row of important functions in the health service:

as the patient's first contact with the health service
as the one who personally and continuously is available for the patient and his or her family
as the one who evaluates the patient's problems on basis of the patient's somatic, mental and social situation

The education

It is the college's goal to strengthen the education in general practice both pre- and postgraduate.
As a result of the college's work general practice has been given a higher priority in the medical school and is now an examination subject on a par with the other large subjects.
The college has worked for improvement of the new continuous education and in collaboration with the Danish Organisation for General Practitioners a statement of aims for the subject, and a report on the demand on tutors in practice and a template for an educationalprogram for the periods in general practice have been made.
The college has the professional responsibility for the context of the theoretical speciality education and in collaboration with the National Board of Health the college has the responsibility for the practical co-ordination of the courses and the clinical speciality education prior to acquirement of the right to set up as a doctor.

Trainees in general practice (FYAM)

All trainees who are member of the college are members of FYAM.
The trainees' special interests are dealt with by a task force under the board of the college, and trainees are represented by at least one member centrally in the board and locally by a representative in each county.
The trainees are also represented in all standing task forces. In each county is a FYAM-group, which is a scientific and social forum for trainees.

Research

The foundation for rational medical work is research. It is important for the work in general practice to enhance research in primary health care and in general practice.

It is the aim of the college to enhance research in general practice on the terms of general practice.

It is the task of the college to work for research in general practice by initiate research and by supporting members engaged in research. Therefore the college seeks to give members opportunity to acquire methodological abilities within research, and scientific training with the aim of independent research. Several methodological courses are held at different levels, and the college have been working for the establishment of the research consultant position.

It is the task of the college to find the necessary facilities for research, opportunities for economic support and expert guidance for general practitioners. The college has been part of setting up the PLU-fund and the setting up of research units at the three institutes. We are still working on finding more means for both central and decentral research.

International contact

For the development of every medical speciality international contact in necessary.

Is is the aim of the college to enhance contact between the national colleges and foreign centres for research and education.

It is the task of the college to enhance the members' opportunity to be up-to-date with the development in general practice at an international level. Therefore the college arranges meetings with invited foreign colleagues, study trips, trips to conferences etc.

The college is co-organiser of the Nordic congresses in general practice.

The college is member of WONCA (The World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians), EQuiP (European Working Party on Quality in Family Practice), EURACT (European Academy of Teachers in General Practice), and EGPRW (European General Practice Research Workshop).

Publications

Together with the Danish Organisation of General Practitioners and the General Practitioners of Copenhagen the college owns Tidsskrift for praktisk lægergerning, which publishes Månedsskrift for Praktisk Lægegerning.
The college publishes Practicus for it's members with orientation and debate.
